Battery Safety Holiday Campaign for 2023

Last Updated: November 28, 2023By

As the festive season approaches, the Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) is joining forces with the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) to shine a light on a crucial aspect of holiday safety—battery safety. The collaborative campaign, titled “Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety,” aims to empower consumers with knowledge on safe practices when it comes to lithium-ion battery-powered devices.

President of ESFI, Brett Brenner, highlights the importance of understanding the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. “In many cities, lithium-ion batteries have become one of the leading causes of fires and fire deaths. When used properly, these batteries are safe, but if they overheat or incur damage, they can cause fires. Learn how to charge your lithium-ion battery-powered devices correctly to keep yourself safe,” cautions Brenner.

Zoe Susice, Senior Director of Research Amplification at FSRI, emphasizes the need for actionable public safety messaging based on scientific research. As the prevalence of lithium-ion battery-powered devices increases in daily life, so does the exposure to associated hazards. The campaign focuses on educating the public about key actions to prevent fires and, in the unfortunate event of a fire, how to respond effectively.

Battery Safety Campaign

Choosing the right lithium-ion battery-powered device is the first step towards ensuring safety. With countless options in the market, consumers are urged to select products from trusted retailers who stand behind their goods. Look for products with warranties certified by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories to safeguard against unsafe products. Replacement batteries should also be purchased from reputable retailers, and old batteries must be responsibly disposed of at recycling centers.

Before using or charging a device, consumers are encouraged to thoroughly read the owner’s manual for manufacturer guidance. Charging should take place in a flat, dry area away from children, sunlight, and potential escape routes in case of a fire. It is crucial to use a manufacturer-approved charger, avoid adapters, and charge devices by plugging directly into a wall outlet. Never leave a device charging unattended, especially overnight.

Taking C.H.A.R.G.E. also involves proper storage and maintenance practices. Once charging is complete, remove the battery or charger to prevent overheating. Store and charge batteries at room temperature, avoiding extremes below 32°F or above 105°F. Keep batteries and devices away from heat sources and combustible materials, refraining from storing batteries in vehicles. Maintenance tasks on batteries or devices should always be entrusted to qualified professionals.

Recognizing the signs of danger is paramount. If an odd odor, discoloration, excessive heat, a change in shape, leakage, smoke, or inability to hold a charge is observed, it could indicate a potential threat. In such cases, move the device away from flammable objects and immediately call 911.

As statistics reveal an increase in home fires and electrical accidents during the winter holiday season, ESFI and FSRI stress the importance of applying these safety measures. Whether purchasing micromobility devices as gifts or for personal use, following these guidelines ensures a safer and more joyful holiday season.
