Stellantis Launches SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub

Last Updated: April 17, 2024By

Stellantis N.V. has marked a significant milestone with the official inauguration of its SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub (CE Hub) at the Mirafiori Complex in Turin, Italy. This cutting-edge facility embodies Stellantis’ commitment to a holistic approach to sustainability, anchored in its 4R strategy: Reman, Repair, Reuse, and Recycle.

The CE Hub’s primary objectives revolve around extending the lifespan of parts and vehicles, promoting a sustainable cycle of material usage, and reducing environmental impact. The facility encompasses four key activities aligned with the 4R strategy:

  1. Remanufacturing (Reman): Used components such as engines, gearboxes, and EV batteries are meticulously disassembled, cleaned, and remanufactured to original OEM specifications, ensuring both sustainability and affordability under the SUSTAINera label. The facility aims to manage over 50,000 remanufactured parts by 2025, scaling up to 150,000 by 2030.
  2. Sorting Center (Reman, Recycle): A robust infrastructure for sorting and managing an estimated 2.5 million worn parts (cores) by 2025, escalating to 8 million by 2030, to support remanufacturing and recycling activities.
  3. Vehicle Reconditioning (Repair, Reman, Reuse): Comprehensive repair and refurbishment of vehicles using new, remanufactured, or used parts, contributing to Stellantis’ manufacturer-certified used-vehicle program (SPOTiCAR) and the Stellantis &You Sales and Services network.
  4. Vehicle Dismantling (Recycle, Reman, Reuse): Leveraging end-of-life vehicles as a valuable resource for remanufacturing, reuse of parts, and material recycling, integrating OEM parts from partner B-Parts into the SUSTAINera Reuse offer.

The CE Hub, occupying 73,000 sq. meters with a significant portion reclaimed from a previously unused facility, embodies Stellantis’ circular economy mindset. The €40 million investment underscores the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, with initiatives like recycling over 5,000 tons of metal and repurposing machinery to achieve substantial cost savings.

Furthermore, the CE Hub aligns with Stellantis’ broader electrification and carbon neutrality goals, evidenced by partnerships for EV battery recycling, end-of-life vehicle management, electric retrofitting, strategic raw material sourcing, and the establishment of gigafactories.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, emphasized, “We are industrializing the recovery and sustainable reuse of materials, building new technologies and advanced capabilities as we grow in this area. Our commitment to remanufacturing, repairing, reusing, and recycling will not only take pressure off our planet but also bring financial value to Stellantis, safeguarding our shared future.”

John Elkann, Chairman of Stellantis, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the CE Hub’s role in reinforcing Italy’s automotive industry while driving environmental sustainability.

The CE Hub stands as a testament to Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, targeting substantial revenue generation and contributing significantly to a more sustainable automotive sector.
